The Inspire Sleep procedure is a surgical option for treating obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The procedure involves the implantation of a small device under the skin in the upper chest. This device, known as the Inspire system, works by delivering mild stimulation to key airway muscles, keeping the airway open during sleep.

The system is controlled by a handheld remote, allowing the patient to turn the device on before bed and off upon waking. The device monitors breathing patterns during sleep and delivers gentle stimulation to the hypoglossal nerve, which controls the movement of the tongue and other airway muscles. This stimulation keeps the airway open, preventing the pauses in breathing characteristic of sleep apnea.

The Inspire procedure is typically considered for patients with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea who have not found relief with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy or other conventional treatments. As with any medical procedure, it's essential for individuals to consult with their healthcare provider to determine if this treatment is suitable for their specific condition and needs.
