What is Inspire therapy?
Inspire is a maskless obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) solution. It’s a surgical procedure that uses an implant to keep your airway open during sleep, a remote, and an app to ensure a better night’s rest in patients with obstructive sleep apnea. Inspire is an alternative to wearing a CPAP mask.
What are the benefits of Inspire?
Inspire therapy is a simple OSA treatment that offers an array of benefits, including:
- Comfortability
- Ease of use
- Less snoring
- Sound sleeping
- More energy during the day
- Less gasping for air
- Reduced breathing pauses during sleep
Inspire has reduced snoring in 90% of individuals using the treatment. You don’t have to deal with wearing a mask or being hooked up to a machine.
The treatment is covered by most commercial insurance companies, Veterans Affairs (VA), and Medicare.
Who can get Inspire for obstructive sleep apnea?
Candidates for Inspire therapy are those struggling with obstructive sleep apnea who have previously tried a CPAP machine without success. Signs of sleep apnea include:
- Gasping for air during sleep
- Brief periods of stopped breathing
- Waking up tired
- Loud snoring
- Morning headaches
- Waking up with a dry mouth
You must be at least 18 years old, not significantly obese, have moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea, and have experienced inconsistent results after trying CPAP treatment.
Inspire therapy is also FDA-approved for pediatric patients with Down syndrome.
You must receive a referral from a trusted sleep apnea clinic, have an apnea hypoxia index (AHI) of 15-65, maintain a body mass index (BMI) of 35 or under, and complete a sleep study (within the last two years).

How does Inspire treatment work for OSA?
Inspire technology involves a simple-to-use system that includes a remote control, an Inspire implant, and an Inspire app. Your specialist implants the small Inspire device under the skin in your upper chest. The implantable device delivers gentle pulses to your airway to keep it open, allowing you to breathe easier and sleep soundly.
You simply control sleep apnea treatment from the palm of your hand. Turn on the device before bed and turn it off when you wake up. Inspire monitors breathing patterns during sleep, delivering gentle stimulation to the hypoglossal nerve that controls tongue and airway muscle movements.
The Inspire app tracks your sleep goals, allowing you to share data with the Lake Grove ENT team.
