Facts about acne scars

Acne develops from skin that has posers clogged up with various materials like dead skin cells, and excess sebum (oil your skin produces to keep it moisturized). Whiteheads and blackheads are common types of acne that once it goes away leaves the skin smooth, but these types will lead to scarring is they’re bad enough:

There are also different types of scarring left by these forms of acne, such as ice pick, boxcar, keloid, and rolling scars. Cysts are the most likely to leave deep scars.

How injectables help

These are substances injected into your skin to provide several benefits, and to manage acne scars, dermal fillers are the injectable of choice. They work to add volume to areas of skin that need it, such as deep wrinkles, sunken cheeks, and reduce the impact of deep acne scars. We offer a number of the fillers from Juvederm®, including Voluma®, Vollure®, and Volbella® to help improve the skin where deep scars have affected it. These fillers use hyaluronic acid, which works by hydrating and plumping skin, and can be used to soften scar tissue.

What to expect

This is an outpatient procedure that starts by cleaning the area to be injected and if necessary apply an anesthetic cream or lotion to reduce any discomfort. Next a thin needle is used to apply the filler which will cause you to feel a pinch, but shouldn’t be painful. Multiple injections may be called for depending on how much work is being done, which means the timeframe can vary from a few minutes to an hour.

Once it’s finished, the area is cleaned again and any swelling or discomfort afterward will be managed with an ice pack. Any bruising, swelling or pain you experience after the procedure will go away in a few days, but the results should be immediate.

Acne scars can look very unpleasant, but dermal fillers can help reduce their impact on your life. Make an appointment with the LOLA team at Lake Grove ENT today to get started.
